Don't throw away the first 30 seconds of your presentation!

If your presentation starts, "Hi, I'm so-and-so, and here are 20 years of my credentials," don't be surprised if they pull out their phones and start checking email!

Start Strong: 5 Bold Openings A practical guide to a powerful first impression

You're a leader with an important message.

So why start with “Hi, my name is…” and an agenda slide?

The truth is, many presentations fizzle before they even get going.

Because you're not taking advantage of the one time in your entire session when you have the audience's most undivided attention.

Whether it’s a team update, a client pitch, or a high-stakes conference breakout, the first 30 seconds are your chance to spark curiosity, set expectations, and show your audience you're an impactful messenger and audience activator worth their time and focus.

First of all, you don't have to tell jokes.

You don't have to create a persona that isn't YOU.

You may have heard all kinds of advice about presentation openings, like "tell a joke." My friend, this is bad advice. Unless you're a comedian, that is.

You don't need a gimmick. You just need to connect. And there are lots of ways to do that in just a few short seconds.

Wouldn't it be awesome if:

🔸You knew exactly what to say to prime your audience for your wisdom?

🔸You immediately felt confident in the first few seconds, knowing you've already set yourself up for success?

🔸You could set the tone right up front for an engaging and enriching experience?

And all without the awkwardness of trying to crack a joke or use some other tactic ("Good morning.... I can't hear you....GOOD MORNING!") that feels inauthentic and not aligned with your style, personality, voice and message?

So... how do you make the most out of our openings? You create a meaningful and memorable experience right off the bat!

The two parts of your presentation that automatically get the most attention are the opening and the closing.

Of course, the body of your presentation has to be engaging, practical, relevant and easy to navigate! But that's a whole other workshop!

Don't waste the opportunity to let your audience know, right from the get-go, that you and your content are worth sticking around for.

You don't want to be a time-waster, especially if you're giving a micro-presentation, and you need a shortcut to quick engagement.

Your topic is heavy, dense or complex and you want to kick off your talk by taking advantage of the audience's curiosity.

You speak frequently and know you could use a refresh of your usual opening.

You're inexperienced and you have no idea how to create an engaging opening.

You're speaking first thing in the morning, right after lunch, or at the end of the day, and you know your audience will need an energy boost!

"I was able to use some of your points today for a brief presentation I did. I definitely implemented your tips and felt more comfortable while talking."

I've given presentations in elementary school, middle school and high school classrooms.

I've spoken to audiences in tech, finance, hospitality, education, academia, transportation, human resources, aviation, real estate, fundraising, travel and tourism, entrepreneurship and all manner of nonprofit and association fields.

And there are a couple of things every audience has in common:

1️⃣ They want to be engaged and inspired

2️⃣ They're tired of presenters wasting their time

Hi! I'm Lisa Braithwaite and I've been speaking, teaching and training for over 30 years.

I know what works. I know what doesn't work. But also, I'm always willing to keep learning and growing, because I know I'm never done.

In this guide, I'll be sharing with you some of what I've learned over the years, as well as tools I've been using and teaching as a speaking coach since 2005.
